A criminal history record check can be obtained without using a background checking service. A background checking service cannot obtain different information than is available to a member of the public. If a background checking service is used, ask a few questions to make sure you know exactly what you will get for your money.

No one can legally get North Dakota state criminal history for non-law enforcement purposes for less than $15.00 (or $5 for an eligible charitable organization), AND they must access the information through the BCI. If a website claims it directly accesses the ND state criminal history repository – be suspicious. No one can directly access the ND information and the BCI does not sell its criminal history database (although some states do). Likewise, a website claiming to access the national criminal history repository also is not to be believed, because fingerprints are required to access information on the national database.

Disreputable background checking services often use deceptive wording to describe what they offer. For example, “federal record checks” (which many would think is a check of the national criminal history database) may be only a check of federal court cases, NOT a consolidation of criminal records from the states.
