PURCHASING A FIREARM
A National Instant Check System (NICS) background check is completed during the concealed weapon license application process. The NICS number is printed on the license for a ND resident but not on the license for a non-resident. A non-resident cannot use the ND concealed weapon license to purchase firearms. Federal – not state – laws regulate the sale and purchase of firearms. For information about federal firearms laws, contact the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms at www.atf.gov.
The Office of Attorney General and the BCI CANNOT answer questions about sales, delivery, or purchase of firearms or eligibility to own, possess or sell a firearm. Contact an attorney in private practice.
RESTORING FIREARM PRIVILEGES
An individual who has been convicted of a non-violent felony offense or a misdemeanor offense may petition the court for restoration of firearm privileges provided the individual meets all the requirements of the law. The Office of Attorney General and the BCI are prohibited from providing legal advice or assistance to the public. For more information, or to initiate a petition, contact an attorney in private practice.
