Bureau
of Justice Assistance
The mission of the BJA is to provide leadership and
assistance in support of local criminal justice strategies to achieve
safe communities. BJA's overall goals are to: (1) reduce and prevent
crime, violence, and drug abuse and (2) improve the functioning of
the criminal justice system. To achieve these goals, BJA programs
emphasize enhanced coordination and cooperation of federal, state,
and local efforts. Programs include funding for:

Bureau
of Justice Statistics
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), a component
of the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice,
is the United States' primary source for criminal justice statistics.
BJS collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on
crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of
justice systems at all levels of government. These data are critical
to Federal, State, and local policymakers in combating crime and ensuring
that justice is both efficient and evenhanded.
Periodically, BJS publishes a document that presents
findings of major BJS statistical series, describes BJS data collection
programs, and summarizes programs to help States and localities to
develop automated information systems. Programs include funding for:
- National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP)
- National Sex Offender Registry Assistance Program
(NSOR)
- National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)

Community
Oriented Policing Services
The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of
1994 authorized funds to promote community policing and add 100,000
community policing officers to our nation's streets. The U.S. Department
of Justice created the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services
(COPS) to carry out this mission. Programs include funding for:
- Universal hiring Program (UHP)
- COPS Making Officer Redeployment Effective (MORE)
- COPS In Schools (CIS)
- Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies

National
Institute of Justice
NIJ is the research and development agency of the U.S.
Department of Justice and is the only Federal agency solely dedicated
to researching crime control and justice issues. NIJ provides objective,
independent, non-partisan, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet
the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the State and
local levels.

Office
of Victims of Crime
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) was established
by the 1984 Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) to oversee diverse programs
that benefit victims of crime. OVC provides substantial funding to
state victim assistance and compensation programs -- the lifeline
services that help victims to heal. The agency also supports training's
designed to educate criminal justice and allied professionals regarding
the rights and needs of crime victims. OVC is one of five bureaus
and four offices, with grant-making authority, within the Office of
Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. Programs include funding

Office
of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention
To provide national leadership, coordination, and resources
to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization.
OJJDP accomplishes this by supporting States and local communities
in their efforts to develop and implement effective and coordinated
prevention and intervention programs and improve the juvenile justice
system so that it protects the public safety, holds offenders accountable,
and provides treatment and rehabilitative services tailored to the
needs of families and each individual juvenile. Programs include funding
